Background
The primary challenge faced by the University was the escalating threat of ransomware. Recognising that its tape backup solution was complex to manage and inadequate for swift recovery from a ransomware incident, they needed a modern, simple-to-use immutable backup solution. Backup requirements at universities are complex due to the volume and variety of data that needs protecting. Thousands of new students also enrol each year, while historical student data needs to be retained for several years for regulatory and compliance reasons. The university also needed a cost-effective way to back up its growing volumes of M365 data.

Similar to a number of universities, security is top of mind, so it looked to Insight, as a leading solutions integrator, to advise on the best future-proof and resource-efficient solution to replace the University’s legacy backup solution.

Leeds Beckett University deployed a modern Cohesity backup and data management solution that provides immutable air-gapped backups to protect its data from ransomware. The secure solution, recommended by Insight, provides data encryption and role-based access control to ensure unauthorised users or applications cannot modify or delete backups. It includes both on-premises and cloud elements, with data now replicated between two on-premises Cohesity clusters, and to Azure. This enables fast local recovery, as well as providing a secure offsite backup. The modern architecture of the Cohesity solution enables the university to recover large amounts of data in minutes instead of hours - as would be required following a major ransomware incident. The solution also enables testing and restore from a sandbox environment, preventing reinfection during recovery. The modern data reduction capabilities of the solution enable the university to efficiently utilise Azure cloud resources. Its cloud backups are cost effective, more secure and simpler to manage than legacy tape-based backups. Cohesity’s modern node-based architecture means the new solution can be scaled cost-effectively, eliminating the need for any expensive fork-lift upgrades. With the new solution in place, Insight can provide the university with on-going support that further enhances its advanced threat detection capabilities, ensuring its data management is future proofed.

As a leading Solutions Integrator, Insight was able to offer expert guidance to Leeds Beckett University on how it could modernise backups, protect the university from ransomware and efficiently utilise Azure resources as part of its wider strategy. Insight’s extensive experience of working with higher education and public sector organisations, enabled it to quickly identify the most suitable solutions when discussing Leeds Beckett University requirements. The team recommended a modern backup solution that met the university’s requirements, while Insight’s Azure consultants provided guidance around the specific considerations of implementing a modern cloud-based solution.

During the pandemic, the right technology became vital to schools. As students and staff returned to the classroom, West Buckland School recognised that supporting the high volume of bring-your-own devices, was inefficient and would create long-term challenges. Historically, lessons often required support from the IT department to resolve connectivity issues. This rendered technology a hindrance and a relatively isolated tool, rather than a fluid component of the learning process. The reliance on printed materials also posed both logistical and environmental concerns. The school desired a shift towards a more sustainable, student-centred approach where technology enhanced the learning experience, rather than hindering it.

To ensure devices could be used effectively in any classroom, at any time, Insight reviewed the school’s existing WiFi provision to ensure it could meet future demands. Having upgraded the network infrastructure, Insight sourced new Microsoft Surface devices to ensure all staff and students had the same user experience, improve the learning experience and minimise printing.

Post-pandemic, West Buckland School – a leading school for boys and girls aged 3-18 – accepted that its students required modern, standardised technology to improve their future learning experiences. The school required a solution that untangled IT complexities, created a seamless teaching experience and a cost-effective procurement method. Pivotal to this was ubiquitous connectivity across the school. Insight installed 171 Meraki MR44 Cloud Managed WiFi 6 access points (including Dual-Band Omni Antennas) and 12 Meraki MR-86 External WiFi 6 Access Points (including External Dual-Band Omni Antennas), which ensured devices worked flawlessly in remote areas of the school, old buildings with thick walls, and new buildings with their own connectivity challenges. Recognising West Buckland’s existing Microsoft environment, Insight deployed 360 Surface Pro 8s and 205 Surface Go 3s across the school. This helped streamline IT support and created a more personalised and adaptable learning experience - made possible by the devices’ versatility and pen input. Digital-first learning, achievable thanks to the deployment of unified devices working on a modern wireless network, led to a major reduction in printing. In one year, the school achieved a reduction in paper usage equating to preserving 146 trees. Insight also connected the school with CHG-Meridian to facilitate a leasing programme, enabling the school to obtain the devices in a financially secure manner. Despite potential supply chain challenges, Insight’s procurement expertise proved crucial, ensuring the timely delivery of devices.
West Buckland worked with Insight due to its history of successful engagements, as well as being able to show a deep understanding of the education sector and expertise within the Microsoft ecosystem. As a leading Solutions Integrator, Insight connected the school with CHG-Meridian, facilitating a leasing programme that meant the school could obtain the devices in a financially secure manner. And despite potential supply chain challenges, Insight’s procurement expertise ensured the timely delivery of devices.
