Move from Hesitation to high velocity
Here’s the breakthrough finding: Seeing is believing. The organisations that push through the trust barrier reap the rewards.
The tipping point: Experience forges trust
Beyond trust, practical challenges are stalling progress.
The biggest hurdles to scaling up
The barrier isn’t budget. It’s trust.
The cost of inaction: Business stagnation
Despite the hype, most businesses are stuck in the starting blocks.
The state of adoption: A story of hesitation
Autonomous AI is a form of AI system architected to achieve complex goals with a high degree of independence. These systems integrate Generative capabilities (to create novel strategies, plans, and content) with Agentic capabilities (reason, orchestrate and execute actions via tools). Autonomous AI systems operate proactively, not just reactively, by maintaining an internal state, learning from outcomes through reflection, and dynamically adapting their multi-step plans to achieve objectives with minimal human intervention. Their autonomy is not merely operational but strategic, enabling them to decide what to do next, not just how to perform a pre-defined task.

“Partnering with Insight allowed us to confidently navigate a highly complex and vital IT transformation. Its expertise, structured and collaborative approach enabled us to consolidate systems efficiently, support future acquisitions and deliver a consistent, secure experience for our global workforce across multiple business units.” Faranak Abar, Global IT Director
Culligan’s expansion through numerous acquisitions had created a highly fragmented technology landscape that served 16,000-plus employees worldwide. Each acquired business operated independently, maintaining distinct IT infrastructures, security practices, applications and management standards across approximately 56 separate environments. This led to inefficiencies, heightened security risks and substantial difficulties in managing and supporting diverse systems globally. Following a major acquisition, the organisation set a 12-month timeline to simplify and consolidate multiple Microsoft tenants and bring all of its new colleagues under a single brand. The scale of the transformation was made more challenging due to language and cultural differences across EMEA and North America.
Challenge
Over a two-year period, Culligan – a global leader in sustainable water solutions and services – completed more than 200 M&A transactions. This rapid growth had created a fragmented IT infrastructure across the organisation. Insight unified these systems into a single, cohesive environment to streamline operational processes and implement a consistent user experience across the business.
Background
Insight deployed a unified global tenant to reduce IT overheads. The transition streamlined Culligan’s processes and improved user experience.
Following a period of significant M&A activity, Insight helped Culligan successfully consolidate multiple IT environments into a unified global Microsoft 365 and Azure tenant. This large-scale IT transformation investment, significantly enhanced user productivity, fostered strong collaboration across IT and business leadership, and significantly reduced IT overheads.

Results
Leading Solutions Integrator, Insight, was chosen for its proven expertise in managing complex, large-scale IT transformations and its strong existing relationship with Culligan. Having successfully delivered smaller integrations and Azure improvements in the past, Insight had demonstrated a deep understanding of Culligan’s infrastructure and strategic goals. The ability to take a holistic approach, which balanced standardisation with the need for regional flexibility, aligned perfectly with Culligan’s operating model. Insight’s methodology-driven delivery, coupled with technical excellence and a collaborative working style, gave Culligan the confidence to trust it with this major IT transformation project.
Why Insight?
“Insight brought the right mix of technical skill and strategic thinking. The team’s ability to deliver at scale, while remaining flexible to our business needs, was critical to the success of this project.” Faranak Abar, Global IT Director
By deploying a greenfield environment, Insight built a solid foundation for Culligan’s future, enabling global alignment in technology, processes and policies. This approach supported both current operations and future M&A activity, while also meeting the company’s security and compliance requirements. Approximately 400 servers were rationalised within Azure, reducing complexity and operational overheads. Throughout the process, Insight utilised structured Runbooks and Implementation Plans to maintain technical precision, minimise disruption and ensure alignment with Culligan’s wider IT transformation goals. Strong relationships were built across all levels of IT and extended into non-IT business unit leadership, supporting collaboration and smooth delivery.
Insight delivered a comprehensive solution tailored specifically for Culligan’s fragmented IT landscape, starting with the consolidation of multiple tenants, including users, devices, Microsoft Teams, SharePoint, OneDrive and servers, into a unified Microsoft 365 and Azure environment. To ensure the secure migration of systems and data, Insight utilised Quest, BinaryTree, BitTitan, Sharegate and Azure Migrate. The project also improved Culligan’s Microsoft 365 environment, adding stronger management features through Intune and reshaping how SharePoint, Teams, and OneDrive were used, following best practices and tailored to the needs of each business. Azure services were updated to support day-to-day operations while keeping everything secure and scalable.

It has been a few weeks since London International Shipping Week, yet the energy from our “Precision at the Port” Executive Briefing still feels as strong as ever. The event brought together more than fifty senior leaders and innovators from across the maritime sector. There was a real sense of momentum in the room, with leaders openly acknowledging the challenges we face and leaning into the opportunities that lie ahead. What stood out most to me was the openness of the dialogue. People spoke candidly about the pressures of legacy systems, manual processes, regulatory constraints, and cybersecurity risks. But rather than dwelling on the problems, the discussions were forward-looking and solution-focused. It was not about frustration; it was about possibility. That collective willingness to share and to learn from each other was inspiring. An aviation comparison at the start really set the tone. It highlighted how inefficiencies that have become the norm in maritime, such as underutilised deck space or slow turnaround times, are not inevitable. Other industries, such as aviation, have solved similar issues through data-driven cultures and disciplined precision. There is no reason why maritime cannot achieve the same.
Steve Hemmings, Client CTO – Maritime, at Insight, summarises his takeaways from the “Precision at the Port” event, held on 15th September, in London.

As I reflect on the day, what stays with me is the sense of shared purpose. These were not isolated conversations or polite exchanges. They were aligned, energetic, and focused on moving the industry forward together. We were connecting dots, challenging old assumptions, and shaping a common vision of the future. For me, the conviction is clear. Synchronised operations are the key to building a more efficient, resilient, and sustainable maritime industry. The conversations at “Precision at the Port” were not the conclusion, but the starting point of a collaborative journey. If we maintain the same positivity, openness, and commitment to partnership that was in the room that day, then I am confident we can turn today’s challenges into tomorrow’s opportunities.
A look to the future
Another highlight for me was announcing the soft launch of Maritech, developed in partnership with HPe. Maritech is designed as a savings-led innovation platform that helps organisations release capital from existing IT and operational spend and reinvest it directly into transformation. It provides a modular foundation for areas such as ESG monitoring, procurement as a service, and enterprise architecture management. This last capability is especially important, giving organisations a structured way to align technology, operations, and investment decisions with their long-term strategy. The positive response confirmed that the sector is looking for practical, cost-controlled ways to innovate without overextending budgets.
Announcing Maritech
Cybersecurity was another area of focus. The early insights we shared from research into cybersecurity in the maritime sector were sobering, showing both a growing threat landscape and a significant skills gap (73%). Yet the reaction from leaders was not one of alarm, but of determination. There was a clear alignment that strategic partnerships will be critical to build resilience and ensure round-the-clock protection. Outsourcing certain functions is no longer about cost efficiency alone, it is about capability and assurance.
Prioritise Cybersecurity
A consistent theme across all discussions was that the future must be integrated. Data silos are holding the industry back. By connecting data from vessels, ports, weather systems, and logistics platforms into a single transparent environment, we can achieve better visibility, smarter decision-making, and meaningful progress on sustainability goals. That integration is not optional, it is essential.
Integration is key
In my session, I shared how AI can act as a practical driver for this shift. Moving operations from reactive to predictive has the power to transform port efficiency, improve asset utilisation, and enhance the overall experience for operators and stakeholders. What really resonated with the audience was the idea that this does not have to remain a long-term vision. With our five-day rapid adoption approach, organisations can go from idea to working prototype in less than a week. It means proving value quickly and reducing risk, something that appealed strongly to those in the room.

But the real challenge now lies in the type of skills we're missing. It's less about the operational grunt work and more about strategic oversight – the cloud security architects, the threat detection gurus, the governance and compliance experts, and crucially, those who can manage the intricate dance between humans and machines. The skills gap is at its most acute in these senior, strategic roles.
Make no mistake, the skills gap is still biting. Our latest research shows a staggering 76% of organisations are feeling the pinch, with nearly half (47%) reporting a severe or significant operational impact. This isn't just a niggle; it's delaying and deprioritising crucial cyber initiatives for over half of businesses (57%). The cost of hiring experienced staff (68%) and a sheer lack of qualified candidates (65%) are key culprits.
The Evolving Threat Landscape: Beyond the Talent Gap
For years, the cybersecurity narrative has been dominated by a single, pervasive threat: the skills crisis. Recruiters battling for scarce talent, security teams stretched thin, and a constant scramble to keep pace with an ever-evolving threat landscape. It's been a tough slog. But a new reality is emerging, one that suggests we're moving beyond the skills crisis and into something arguably more profound: a strategy crisis. The problem isn't just about finding enough cyber bods; it's about whether our current approach to cybersecurity is fundamentally fit for purpose in a world increasingly powered by AI.
: The Cyber Paradox
Everything IT Q4 2025 | 11
Smart, integrated cybersecurity platforms are a game-changer. They provide access to more advanced technology than many businesses could build in-house, centralising security tools and strategy. Critically, they are the conduit for safely and strategically integrating advanced AI. AI on these platforms can handle time-consuming tasks like threat detection and vulnerability scanning, freeing up expert staff for advanced threat hunting and strategic modelling. The key? A "human-in-the-loop" approach, ensuring technology always serves strategy and builds trust.
Leveraging Intelligent Platforms
Businesses partnering with MSSPs report significant gains in resilience (79%), visibility (77%), and compliance (72%). It’s about demanding more from your partners – a strategic alliance, not just a service agreement.
The days of siloed security teams and fragmented tools are drawing to a close. True resilience is built on deep, integrated partnerships. This is why three-quarters of organisations are already working with Managed Security Service Providers (MSSPs), and most plan to increase their reliance. MSSPs offer 24/7 coverage, access to specialist expertise, and crucially, help plug those internal skills gaps.
Building Integrated Partnerships
The future of cybersecurity talent isn't about more hands on keyboards for operational tasks – AI and automation are increasingly taking care of that. It's about cultivating leaders who can expertly manage human-machine teams, translate complex technical risks into clear business implications, and embed a security-first culture throughout the organisation. While AI is expected to ease the skills crunch, robust training and retention programmes for junior staff are also vital for building a pipeline of future strategic leaders.
Investing in Strategic People
To navigate this new landscape, cybersecurity needs to be viewed not as a technical overhead, but as a fundamental business enabler. This demands a holistic, three-pronged investment strategy:
Future-proofing your defences: The three pillars of cyber resilience
But here’s the crucial point: AI isn't here to replace our security teams. It's here to augment them. Think of AI as a powerful force multiplier, capable of automating repetitive tasks, unearthing deeper insights, and enabling lightning-fast responses. It can revolutionise the work of our Security Operation Centres (SOCs) and supercharge application security, thereby helping to close that persistent skills gap. Organisations that get their AI transformation right will find their cyber defences significantly boosted, and their human talent free to focus on higher-value, strategic work.
Enter Artificial Intelligence. AI is often presented as a panacea, and while its potential is immense, its full integration into cyber defence is still in its infancy. Only one in five organisations has genuinely embedded or deployed AI at scale, and even fewer (a mere 7%) are running truly advanced autonomous AI systems. So, why the hesitation? It largely boils down to trust. While 57% of organisations express some confidence in autonomous AI outcomes, only a tiny 15% are "extremely confident". The top concerns? Fears of inaccurate results (52%), inherent bias (40%), and the perennial "black box" problem – a lack of transparency in how AI arrives at its conclusions (39%). These aren't trivial worries; they demand serious attention.

The cybersecurity skills crisis has indeed evolved into a strategy crisis. The organisations that will thrive are those that invest holistically in their people, embrace powerful AI-driven platforms, and forge deep, strategic partnerships. By doing so, they won't just secure their businesses; they'll supercharge their ability to innovate, grow, and lead in a rapidly changing world.
Strategic Partnerships for Deployment Deploying AI at scale is complex. Partnering with experienced external specialists can provide the deep technical expertise and proven methodologies needed to accelerate adoption whilst mitigating risk.
Fostering a Culture of Psychological Safety Investing in organisation-wide AI literacy and promoting transparency can help employees see AI as an augmenting tool, not a threat. We need environments where AI systems can be openly challenged and refined.
Embracing Explainable AI (XAI) We need to move beyond "black boxes". XAI approaches prioritise transparency, making AI's decision-making processes understandable and building user confidence.
Prioritising Robust Governance Clear AI governance structures are paramount, defining roles, responsibilities, and the thresholds for human oversight. Every AI initiative needs to be scrutinised for bias and safety from the outset.
To truly accelerate AI adoption and harness its power, we must address the trust barrier head-on. This involves:
